The White Rose and the Swastika
Book Summary
The White Rose and the Swastika is the personal story of one girl, Jutta Marshall, nee Schweighofer, who was born in Vienna and spent her wartime childhood under Nazi doctrination in the Ostmark of Hitler's Third Reich. Her country taken over by the Allies in 1945, Jutta and her family found themselves in the Soviet sector of the new Austria, an occupation which was to last a whole decade.
Having trained as a teacher, Jutta worked in various German and Austrian private and state schools. During a study trip to Britain she was introduced to jeweller Brian Marshall. They married and settled in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, where they have lived ever since.
Jutta never severed her ties with her homeland. Through teaching German to adults and children and arranging numerous exchanges and family holidays she has forged close links between her native and adopted countries.

Brian and Jutta have two grown up sons. They have recently retired from their Scarborough family business.

Though Jutta Marshall's life was so affected by war, this is not a story of violence and destruction but a gentle, often humorous, and enticingly readable account of a girl and her family determined to lead an ordinary life in the most extraordinary circumstances. It will appeal to all who remember the last war - and to those who wonder 'what is was like to be there'.
